Haven't driven the truck in a while because it wouldn't start. Cranks fine but not getting spark. Getting juice to both posts of the coil but no spark at the plugs or the coil wire. Saw smoke coming from what Chilton calls an "external resistor" thats located near the coil by the front grill. There's a wire attached to each of 2 posts attached to it both of which has juice when tested with a test light. Could this resistor cause the no spark condition? Is it available anywhere?

Before it stopped starting I had a friend mig weld something on the truck and we forgot to disconnect the battery. Afterwards I noticed when I started the truck and let it run the cat would start getting red after a while. NOt long afterwards it stopped starting. Could this have fried some of the electricals and have something to do with it not starting now? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

yea that would be your best bet. hopefully your coil is just needing replacemnt, you can get an after market one for fifty dollars. one that does not require the resistor. I am concerned with your catalytic converter getting red hot, thats not good ??? your friend owes you a new truck if its more things. anyone who welds onto a vehicle should have the sense to take the battery ciruit apart.
