Default 4x4 Problem

Hello everyone, I've got a 2001 B4000 Pickup Truck. I don't know much about trucks or 4WD so I've been stupidly driving around in 4WD LOW this past month of winter. Today problems started: the truck is making this whirring noise (that I can only hear from inside the truck) when I accelerate especially past around 20 mph. When I take my foot off the gas the truck slows down VERY quickly almost like I'm stuck in first gear or something. I can't get the truck to leave 4WD LOW now - it won't go into 2WD or 4WD HIGH. The **** will turn but the indicator light on the dash doesn't change from 4WD LOW. Also I'm getting significant tire slippage in the back tires and the truck is jolting when I start up from a stop. I'm not even sure I can go past 30 mph right now. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Of course I'll be taking the truck in to get it looked at as soon as possible but any pointers you all could share with me would still be appreciated.

Thanks,
~ sage

I would try a simple fix first.. Just change the dope in the transfer case. IF it is black you have major problems. The oil weight to replace what is in there is a 80 or 90 weight. You may be surprized this may work. As well unless you are driving on dirt of wet roads never at any time drive your truck in 4 wheel drive as your front wheels are a very slight degree slower then your rear wheels and thus you have the problem you are now having.

Thanks for the support everyone! I got to thinking more about my problem after I wrote the post and realized that even though I thought I was in 4WD LOW all this time I wasn't - which is why it wasn't making revving noises before today and why I could drive on the road fine before today - it must have finally just switched itself into 4WD LOW today and is stuck there. Hopefully it will switch itself out of 4WD LOW but I'll still have to get the switch fixed so I can change drive whenever.
