Mx3 1.6 will not start, no spark

Greetings! Newbie here. I posted my problem in the Gen tech forum then found the MX3 specific forum here. Can anyone look it up there and help me out please? Would greatly appreciate getting my MX3 running again. I bought her new in 1992.

Gas goes bad over time. It loses octane and a cold engine needs to run rich to start. It sounds like you might have more going on than just that since when it ran last it did not run well. Spray some starting fluid into the intake and see if it starts. If the fuel gets really bad it causes the valves to stick. You have to start somewhere though. See if you have spark/fuel pressure/injector pulse (noid light)

I hope to get a spark test light this week. I took the MAF off sunday and tested it. One test was below spec and the rest was ok. I hooked the MAF back up and now it won't even crank. Going out to check the fuses today. I did pour some fresh gas in it last year and then last week. It was nearly empty. Will try the starter fluid if I can get it to start least crank again. I have wondered if the fuel filter might be gummed up.
Thanks for your reply.

An old spark plug makes a good enough spark tester.

Thanks on the old spark plug idea. I have plenty of those. I carefully reinstalled the MAF and still no crank. The TENS test does not work anymore either. Seems like I am making things worse instead of better. Was cranking over strong before the MAF removal. Battery is fully charged. No clicking from the starter.

If you have a test light check for power at the small wire on the starter while cranking. You might just need a starter as cleaning the MAF can't really effect the starter circuit.
