Hey ....
I had joined this forum thinking I could converse with other MPV owners and learn more about Mazda .... this sound reasonable?:confused: The question at hand still Not answered ... is it possible to: Raise MPV to accept bigger tires Thanks glassman |
The reason you probably have not gotten an answer is that no one has tried it before. There is little AM support for an MPV which is meant as a family/people hauler and not expected to be the subject of modding. If you want it done you may have to come up w/your own solution... like getting taller springs wound. |

Basically I want to 'lift' the MPV 2" to accept larger tires [more aggressive tread pattern] same smooth ride.
I realize it will probably take my speedometer out abit ... but I was told recently to add those hard rubber 'extenders' to coils .... maybe change front struts from standard to AWD struts. MPV [Multi-Purpose Vehicle] ... want larger more aggressive tires to drive off road [NOT 4X4 WHEELING] .... DRIVE OFF ROAD Any & All input re:modding my MPV appreciated Until then, glasman |
Bigger wheels, higher C of G.
Higher C of G, degraded roll stability. Off-road use, higher probability of encountering terrain likely to promote high roll angles and roll rates. 1st priority, rollover cage. Over and out. |
Also, those rubber donuts will wear out your springs prematurely. They put additional strain on the working coils. A guy I know tried this w/a Mazda3 HB because he had over 600 lbs of stereo equipment in the hatch area. Within 2 years his OE springs were junk and the car sagged. This is not new as I had heard of others with similar problems using donuts and extenders. The only correct way would be to use longer, stronger springs, and as far as I know no one makes them for an MPV. Now some other OEM might fit, but you would have to do a lot of research to find out length, diameter, gauge of the spring stock and spring pressure. You would need a specialist that had spring specs for all models and could tell you which ones would work, or have some wound especially for your application. You would also need an alignment shop that would be able to compensate for the lift and bring the vehicle back into spec, or perhaps a custom spec (e.g. more negative camber all around) would be better. |

Basically .... would installing front struts made for a 4 x 4 Mazda MPV and rear coils and springs work? :confused: I had thought that it would work ... keeping with Mazda .... FRONT END ALIGNMENT afterward. Q?/ How do people add larger rims & tires to ANY of their Mazda's w/o any problems???? Awaiting your reply glasssman |
People typically keep the overall diameter the same and increase the wheel size.
How handy are you? If you can fabricate custom pieces, you should be able to drop the mounting points for all 4 corners of the suspension, thus raising the vehicle. (This is what most truck lift kits on IFS vehicles do.) That's a ton of work though. Have you considered getting out a sawzall and opening up the wheelwells? |
