Purchasing a 97 MPV 4x4
 

Hello. I am considering purchasing a 1997 MPV All-Sport 4x4 with the 3.0L V6. It has 134,000 miles. I have some questions about this vehicle if someone has the information.

1) Is this an "interferance motor" if the timing belt breaks? (I just got burned by my old Volvo...may it rest in peace)
2) Does the A/C have a problem with leaks or compressor failure?
3) Are there any known issues with the 4x4 drivetrain that I should have a mechanic inspect?
4) In 2WD mode, not towing anything, what kind of highway gas milage can I really expect?
5) Are the middle captain's chairs removable?

My trusty old Volvo bit the dust with a timing belt breakage. Volvo wanted way too much money to fix it. It is now scrap. I need to know how fast I need to get the timing belt changed with 134K miles.

Good choice in vans triggerfish.
It is not an interference engine. Timing belt breaks then you replace belt and whatever tensioner probably failed and you are back on the road. No know common problems with the A/C system. Our 91 has 180k and A/C still cranks out the cold air. 4X4 issues. Check for excessive play between the front axle stub shaft and the left front inner cv joint. Have problems with wearing out and needing to replace the entire assembly as they become virtually welded together. Expect around 20-25 mpg depending on how you drive. Center captains chairs are not designed to be removed but simple to do with by removing the four 14mm attaching bolts at each seat. Make sure the transmission has been serviced and fluid is not burnt as well. Was one of the weak points of the older MPV although they may have fixed the torque converter lining peeling off in that later year. We have not had any problem yet with our and it is much older. knock on wood!!

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunatly, this van is coming off a used car lot, so history is a mystery. I am going to make an offer tomorrow. After I get it, I will have all the fluids changed, and drivetrain inspected. It seems to drive nice. We will have to see how it handles northern New Hampshire winters...if only they had heated seats. And what is up with the sunroof?! Is this a record for the largest singe piece of glass installed in a passenger car?

Oh-well, I need the utility.
