Poor fuel economy MPV 2.5l 2000
 

I have a Mazda MPV 2.5l 2000 model. It was a Japanese import into New Zealand if that helps at all.

Lately it has become very heavy on fuel, 20 to 30% heavier than usual and a little sluggish.

In the last 12 000km's it have had spark plugs and leads replaced.

Recently the oil and oil filters were replaced.

The air filter is clean.

Fuel filters that I could find were checked and are not blocked.

The car idles fine except on one occasion after starting where it was a little rough but this settled after a few revs. There is no noticeable misfire.

One thing I did notice was that there is a unit in the fuel line between the final fuel filter and the fuel injection system. There is one in and one out for the fuel pipes. Two wires go to the unit via a removable connector. The wires run into the wiring loom and their source in unknown. One of the wires has broken off at the connector.

What does this unit do?
Could it affect fuel economy?

i am not 100% sure but that could be the fuel regulator, i guess. i wouldn't know what other unit would have a fuel feed and return line. if that is the regulator, it could affect fuel economy by sending too much fuel. i would think that the regulator on your vehicle would be vacuum operated. i may be wrong though. i'm not up on japanese domestic models, but they aren't that different.

you said that the wire is broken, but do you think that you can repair it at all? it would definitely help a lot of that was the whole fix on the motor.

Unfortunately the wire cannot be fixed easily as it has broken at the point it enters the connector. I will see if I can find a replacement connector and replace the whole connector thanks.
