Please help rear shock removal

Hi all
Im new here and trying to change the rear shocks in my moms 2005 mazda mpv
Shes coming back from the hospital
This week and im trying to surprise her by changing her rear shocks for her as they are shot.
Ive done shocks on other cars before but never encountered ones like this
I removed the rear wheel
Removed the upper shock mount nut and washer
Removed the lower shock mount bolt
And the shock seems to be stuck inside the rear "swingarm" (not sure if what to call it) but if you know this year and model you know what i mean
Doing it in the driveway i put it back together as i have a bad back and it was getting late and had to get to my
Night job
Is it possible to remove the old shock when its fully compressed or does half the rear end of the car have to be removed simply to change the rear shocks?
Thanks so much in advance for any help i cant seem to find anything on this vehicle in you tube or any google search
Thanks

If you were able to get the lower nut off and the bolt out, a pry bar or hammer should loosen it. Nothing else is holding it in place but rust.

With my boyfriends help, I was able to get the van jacked up high enough, and get the shocks *completely* compressed to get them off...rust wasn't a factor, inexperience and not quite large enough biceps was!!!

I appreciate the help!
