Excessive black stuff

Hi I'm new to this forum I have have my 2004 7 seat MPV 2.0 diesel since new, today my son was following me through an A road onto the motorway and he says that the MPV was black smoking on accelaration and at other times it has done 51,000 mls and been serviced regularly and just passed it's M.O.T has anybody any idea's what will cause this excessive black smoke, any help gratefully accepted.

Black smoke means your not getting enough air to burn the fuel that is being injected or the timing is wrong. Is there a lack of power? It could be many things such as a dirty air filter, failing (or failed) turbo, internally plugged intercooler (usually oil/sludge), leaking intake hoses, improper injection timing, stuck wastegate, leaking exhaust to name a few.

Also welcome to the forums! :) Please add your vehicle to your signature since that makes it easier for all of us to help, details such as year/model/engine/transmission help immensely :D

There is no lack of power it has been regularly serviced it is a bit heavy on diesel but it does do a lot of traffic work around south east London I'll have it checked out and report back

I should also add that it can smoke badly if your in too high a gear for your speed (aka lugging it), my truck rolls coal if you dont get the revs up (therefor boost) then it clears up fine.........mostly.

lugging it no ! this happens during accelaration and upto 70mph on the motorway in fact it seems to be pretty persistent...another thing I have noticed that after it has been parked on a down slope (nose down) that when started it blows blue smoke from the exhaust, This clears as you drive away ? but parked on the flat or with the rear lower no blue smoke ?

Now that is weird, sounds like oil is pooling somewhere in the intake only to get sucked up and burned when started. How is the oil consumption? A quart in less than a 1000 miles is what I would call not that great although Ford said a quart in 750 was ok for my truck LOL.

that's about right manbe a bit better than a quart in a 1000 miles....
