Engine Light - POO401 & POO301

Hi, my engine light is flashing. Took it to AutoZone. The diagnostic is P00401- EGR insufficient flow detected. What is an EGR? The other diagnostic code is POO301 - cylinder 1 misfire condition detected. Again what does this mean? For how long can I continue driving with these problems before it gets serious? Or is this a serious problem now?

Thanks for your input.

EGR=Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Its a valve from the exhaust system, usually the manifold, that opens to recirculate unburned gases into the engines intake system.

Misfire means that the spark plug is not sparking/igniting the fuel correctly. This could mean a fouled spark plug, a bad wire to the plug, or a bad ignition coil.

I wouldn't drive the car any further than you absolutely had to. Dumping raw, unburned fuel into the exhaust system of a modern car can cause other more serious problems... such as a short-lived catalytic converter, and that fix can and will cost a bunch 'o' money. It can affect (foul) the oxygen sensors too which can cost several hundred dollars for the part alone... especially the "heated" one downstream (behind) from the catalytic converter.
Right now, it seems that your problems are relatively small ones. Relatively easy and cheap fixes. May I suggest for your own safety and pocketbook that you not make them any worse and get them fixed ASAP?
Good Luck!!

Had the same problem the engine was running rough: Cyl 1. Replaced coil and plug at the dealer.
