RE: engine block

I typically use a razor blade to get rid of any residual gasket/sealer, then I clean the surface with paint thinner and let air dry. Never had a problem with leaks due to a poor seal using this method.

So long as both surfaces (head & block) are clean, you should be fine. Not sure if you've got a service manual or not, but the sequence of torqueing the head bolts down is critical to getting/maintaining a proper seal. I'd recommend either a Haynes or Chilton's manual, but be sure to look inside to see if it has the information you are looking for. I've seen some manuals be very detailed while others had less information than the owners manual.

Try going to your local dealer and ask them if you can see this part of their manual. I've had some let me take a photocopy of the pages I needed.
