Brake Pedal Chirps When Released

Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix? When I let off my brake pedal and release it, I can hear a chirp somewhere under the van. It is quite a loud chirp when the brake pedal is released. Anyone else ever have this or hear it? Try this somewhere where it is quiet, like in your garage.

RE: Brake Pedal Chirps When Released

Check to see if the chirp noise is coming from one or both of the rear wheels. Sounds like your rear brake drum backing plate bosses are dry and the brake shoes are chirping against them as they return to released position. There are three raised areas on the brake drum backing plate for each brake shoes that your brake shoes rest/slide against. If the brake shop that replaced your front pads and rotors inspected and cleaned the rear brakes then perhaps they did not relubricate these contact points. The lubricant can also just dry up and be worn off if the brakes have not been serviced regularly. If you will look at the exploded view of rear drum brakes below, the depiction at lower rear corner shows the location of these raised areas that need the lubrication. I use either anitsieze compound or white lithium grease for a lube.
