2004 mpv emergency/parking brake

Hello everyone.

I've got a small problem with the e brake. My wife pulled the brake handle going down a hill (car was not on, power brakes didn't work). It did it's job and stopped the car but not before she heard and felt a popping sound. She described it as if the cable snapped...I checked, it didn't. After looking at it being operated it appears to still be connected and working the brakes in both rear wheels. Since this happened the brake will not hold the car even on a small slope in the driveway. Any suggestions on fixxing this. I've tried pulling it many, many times in case it self-adjusts. Hasn't worked yet.

Thanks.

OK...a bit of an update. The brake works when the car is pointing downhill but will not hold when facing uphill. Any thoughts?
