2002 MPV rough idle. Fuel too lean?

Starts fine.In "park" RPM is >1000. In gear RPM drops below 1000 RPM and feels like it is going to stall. Check engine light is ON. Oil change garage mechanic says fuel too lean is the reason. "Fuel filter needs replaced!" saysoil change guy. That is expensive due to filter INSIDE the gas tank. (What a stupid place for that!) 80,000 + miles

I have tried to fix by adding one bottle of fuel injector cleaner to tank and running approx 4 gal of 91 octane fuel. Always used 87 octane regular before.

Are there any other "fixes" to fix too lean of a fuel mixture? Tune up? Cleaning of some other easier to get to filter? Oxygen sensor thingy?

Lean can mean too much air or not enough fuel. A vacuum leak can cause it or dirty injectors.I doubt it is the fuel tank sock but it is possible. You will need the code though as there is a troubleshooting chart for every code.

If your filter is clogged, nothing will fix that other than changing the filter. (not enough fuel getting from the tank to the engine.)

Check your fuel pressure at the engine to see if you are getting adequate fuel through the system. If you are, you can check to see if your engine is running lean by reading the plugs. (electrode)

White residue - lean (too little fuel)
Brown residue - exactly what you want
Black residue - rich (too much fuel)

What code# is read from the Check Engine Light? That will tell you the area of concern.

If it is the fuel filter it will set at effect both banks so you will have two codes. Lean bank one and lean bank two. A clogged filter will not effect just one bank. Post the codes if you can. A dirty MAF hotwire can set a lean code also. Pretty easy fix.
