2001 Mazda MPV missing
 

We have tried replacing spark plugs only to find that we cannot reach the last ones.
1) Could those old spark plugs be causing the miss during loading the engine like going up hills?
2) How can we replace them without removing the engine?
3) What do we need to repair/maintenance besides the plugs once we are in the engine?

A few thoughts:

1) If the plugs you didn't replace are bad, that can certainly cause the engine to miss. Have you gotten a CEL? Often the code will tell you which cylinder is missing. Cylinders 1, 2, and 3 are the bad boys in the back, and getting to their respective plugs is a beeyotch class 1. :mad:

2) You don't have to "remove" the engine, but there are a lot of steps to get to those pesky back cylinders. There are some pretty good videos posted on the web to show you how.

3) If you're doing the plugs, you may want to check the ignition wires - those can go bad. Also, MPVs have ignition coils, and those can go bad as well. Hopefully, that isn't what you're facing, because coils run 60-70 $$ per.

OLD Thread, i know. But i just wanna put this out for everyone to know :)

To get to the plugs in the back, you do NOT need to remove the engine. However, you do have to take it a part a little bit.

1.) Gotta remove Air intake (Air filter Tube)
2.) Remove hold down for the throttle, cruise control cables
3.) Detach all electrical connectors attached to electronic components on the manifold.
4.) Remove the pcv hoses from manifold (In back)
5.) Remove the bolts, should be able to lift it out without much trouble.

There might be something i missed, but you'd see it if its still in the way. Just a general idea of what all needs to be done for that.
