2000 mpv engine

Does the 2000 mpv engine....2.5 L dohc have a non interfearance engine? I beleave i have a timing belt fixen to go out. i have a knocking sound coming from that area. doesnt sound like a lifter more of like a belt slapping. Kinda smoothes out when you get to a higher rpm. Reason i say timing belt cause it hasnt never been changed. And it has 150,000 miles on it. I work offshore and on the way to catch out it started making the noise. I have around a 2 hour drive to get it somewhere to be fixed and was wondering if it does break will it damage the engine. Thanks for any info on this.

I have done a bunch of reading and searching and cant get a direct answer to my question but i have read
that if the engine has 24 valves/4 valves per cylinder, then it is a non-interference engine. How true is this?

RE: 2000 mpv engine

Well i finally got a hold of the service dept. at a dealership.....man working on a offshore drilling rig has its draw backs lol, but anyway....the 2000 dont have a timing belt they have a timing chain. So hence its a interference engine....thats why they put a chain instead of a belt. And i was told that its highly unlikely that the timing chain is going out at 150,000 miles. So i was also told i either have a timing chain guide going out thats making the knocking sound or..... and like i said it doesnt sound like lifters cause its coming from one side of the engine. In a few days i will get a chance to take a better look at it. And maybe find a shop on the way home to check it out.
