Timing Belt
A friend of mine has a 95 Millenia. His timing belt just broke (150k miles). He says that it's in the shop getting replaced. Are these engines (2.5L) interference or not. In other words will the pistons and the valves try to destroy each other if the belt breaks? My Millenia has 103K miles and I heard the belt is supposed to be replaced at 105K. My friend is also not mechanically inclined and I want to believe these are not interference engines since he says it's "getting fixed". The mechnic hasn't contacted him since he had it towed (1 day ago) and he may not know the extent of the damage. My Milly is also a 95. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Timing Belt
Your Milly needs a new belt evry 60k miles, at least mine (a '96) does. If it is a younger car, they may have increased the interval for them, I dont know. Agree with Keninn above, 2.5's are non interference, so unless he was going 120 MPH when it broke, no damage was done to valves, cylnders, head, ect.
I say 'unless he was doing 120 mph' because that is the waythe Mazda service advisor put it to meover the phone. I bought my '96 Milly for $400 (it was not running) and replaced the belt, now its all running fine............. |
