Steering fluid

Extracted steering fluid from reservoir in order to replace w/new fluid.Noticed that itwas full of ATF.Cap says use steering fluid only.Is ATF suitable,or should I flush ATF out and replace w/power steering fluid? While on the subject,if power steering fluid is to be used, which brand/type is proper,if ATF is not used?

RE: Steering fluid

ATF is just fine. Shop manual calls for Dexron II/Mercon III which is just general ATF.
1.32qts capacity for the system.

RE: Steering fluid

Well that figures.I was scrambling to find P/S fluid when I discovered there was none here at work (marina);had to be somewhere in a hurry. We got cases if ATF.I already dumped 2 1/2 pints of steering fluid (ran up the road and bought some) in it.Now have a pink mixture.I assume the two mixed is OK?I've already driven about 100 miles since w/no problems or "funny" steering feeling.

Should not hurt anything at all. They are just different hydraulic fluids. ATF is only dyed red so it can be distinguishable from other oils anyway. Am sure they get mixed all the time at lube places topping up the fluid levels.
