Overheating
 

I have a 2002 Mazda millenia 2.5
I'm having problems with it overheating in certain circumstances, not all the time but it happens once in a whilewhen is very hot ouside in stop and go traffic. I changed the thermostat, put plenty of 50-50 anti-freeze but that didn't fix the problem. Yesterday when the temperature needle was almost at the top I popped the hood while the engine stillrunning with the AC turned off, and noticed the the AC fan was on and the other fanwasn't spinnigeventhough the engine was overheating. Are they suppose to kick in at the same time? Are they both suppose to kick in when i turn the AC or just one fan.

If I have a fan problem how do i find out exactly what it is. I heard it could be something called a relay (where do I find that),I heardthat it could be cooling sensor, or thefan. HOW DO I RULE EACH ONE OF THEM OUT? I don't want to spend a fortune taking it to the dealer or buying unnesary replacements.

I just removed the fan and hot wired it to the battery and it worked, so it's not the fan. The fan fuses are good so it's either the relay or the cooling sensor. Which one is the cooling fan relay, can someone tell me?(show me a diagram or pictures if possible)

i have my fan hot wired to a switch fuse, when i start th car the fan comes on... now if i could get the tranny working correctly i would be great..

I have the very same problem with my mazda. Did you find a resolution this overheating issue?

Yes I got the problem solved!! yay! Somewhere online if found that if you umplug the connector on the cooling sensor thenturn the ignition keyto theon positionboth fans should come on. I did the test and myAC fan came on but cooling fan didn't, so something was wrong with either the fan,fan relay or cooling sensor. Itestedthe fan by connecting it directly to the batteryand it worked,so the fan was good. So it waseither the cooling sensor or relaythat was bad. I went to the dealer and ordered the relay for the cooling fan. I installed it, idid the test again and the fan actually came on alongwith the AC fan.I never had any problemswith the car overheating again. I had a bad relay!

Keep an eye on it. Relays usually fail due to excessive amperage draw. IE the fan motor pulling excessive amperage due to worn brushs normally. If you still have the old relay take it apart and look at the contacts. Look for blackened contacts. If so check the amperage draw of the fan motor, and check connections.

I have same problem, where is the cooling sensor located?
