01" 2.5 missing periodically-hold light flash

Hi all! I'm new to this site. Didnt know such a place existed. Pretty cool.
After traveling 300 miles in my 2001 Milly w/2.5L with 149000 miles on it, I started to experience the following after an hour rest then a re-start: At 60 - 65 mph the "hold" light would flash then the vehicle would down-shift. I was taching over 4000 of course. After an hours rest in which I checked for bad fuses, I had to drive again and it ran normally. Fast forward five hours: I drove 30 miles at 70 mph with no problem, then exited and drove 30 mph in the city and it missed a few times, then ran good again. The next day on the highway drive home all was fine till I went 120 miles, at which point it started missing again. The hold light never came on this time. I exited after 5 minutes of this, fueled up, dined and rested an hour, then drove the next 180 miles with no problem at all. Prior to this, I was amazed at how smoothly this car ran. Burns no oil - no drips - nada.
Can any of you experienced Mazda-maniacs point this ol' boy in the right direction?

the HOLD light

My 626 has a problem associated with a flashing HOLD light on the dash, the hold being the lock out of the ODrive. If you got a good answer, I'd like you to share it with me.

so, when was the last time either transmission was serviced? like a fluid change? if the answer is never, i would start there. pull the dipstick, is the fluid still red? does it smell burned?
