Default A question about Special Edition

Hey all! Glad to be a member now, after many years of looking, I finally landed a Miata.

It's a 2003, Mica Blue Special Edition.. And my question is this:

From everything I've read, the SE's, all 1,549 of them, were supposed to be 6sp manuals, however the one I have is very much an automatic. I don't see any evidence, nor did the previous owner say anything about a conversion, and his mother owned the vehicle since new. Thinking maybe someone slapped a badge on it (unlikely given who I got it from) I did some digging. This VIN matches a 300-range production number VIN that is on the list of the 2003 SE's, so it appears to be legit. But, for some reason I cannot find -any- documentation supporting that this vehicle should be auto? Any insight into this? I know very little of the Mazda world at present.
Thanks!
-=Tristan
