1990 Miata Overheating

Okay... well my project for this weekend was/is install of a Moss rollbar and wire for my XM Radio. I say *was* because in traffic yesterday, she started to overheat badly and now I gotta dig to the bottom of that issue. For those that are going to attempt to advise, it has no A/C and just the single fan.

(1) Fan does work, just not coming on at the right time. Unable to determine if the problem is not still in the fan motor though as the relays on the right side of the engine compartment do appear to be functioning.

(2) Could be a dying thermostat?

(3) Hayes manual offers the fan microswitch as a possible culprit. Now, here is my question that they were not clear on... while I do not have A/C, when I turn on the "Air" shouldn't the fan start going simply because it is on? Because the fan does not come on all the time when I turn on the air, I suspect either the microswitch or back to #1 and a bad fan.

...thoughts?

i was thinking the micro switch the whole post before you said it. i would start there and go ahead and do the thermostat. i never trust them after a car overheats.

It could be a thermostat, are you losing any coolant?
