My dealership offered the first oil change free with no restriction on the timing. If they are willing to do it for free in May or June, I would wait and do it before 12 months / 6,000 miles as grim_reaper suggests. If not, free is free and it can't hurt to have it done at 500 miles.

I would make sure they use full synthetic oil, otherwise, it is not worth getting it done.

"I would make sure they use full synthetic oil"

That free oil change will use the cheapest oil that meets the specs in the owner's manual. Ordinary bulk (tank truck delivery or 55 gallon drum or 275 gallon tote) plain old 5W-30. It won't be bad oil, it just will be cheap.

i did couple first oil changes on my honda none turbo back in a day at dealer . after year or so replaced suspension linkage under the warranty, never been at dealer since then.allways changing oil at some stations no problem with warranty. totaled after 68000 miles.on other car salvage title .went to dealer for oil change on 25k miles (before was changing at some oil stations) asked for synthetic oil.they put regular i asked why they gave me next oil change free.did that and never come back .

Default Oil change @500 miles

The oil in our skyactive engines is specifically synthetic, so a dealer would not use any standard petroleum-based oil. 0w-20 is the required synthetic and any other weight oils are not recommended. With a free oil change comes a checkup of the rest of the car, and with only 500-1000 miles anything they find, which they shouldn't, would also be free, or demand it be free. Regardless, then you have a dashboard reminder telling you have 7500 miles until the next oil change. Some dealers do the first one free regardless.

If this servicing is needed/recommended, what kind of a cost am I looking at ?
Yes, the 500-mile oil change is likely for the break-in oil, which is sometimes recommended by dealerships. It’s generally a good idea if suggested. The cost will typically range from $50 to $100, depending on where you go. Check your owner's manual to confirm if it's necessary.

Not sure if you have actually read how engines are manufactured in the last 20 years , but won’t get into that.

I would actually like to see the actual service suggested service for a new Mazda engine at 500 miles. Maybe someone misunderstood and it was 5000 miles at least that would be understandable.

I should mention there has not been “break in motor oil” used in decades from any auto manufacturers.

please supply empirical data or fact based supported information that can checked and verified.

hey I am a believer that changing the oil in a new engine at 3000 miles is a great idea but not at 500. At 3000 if you had it analyzed would show the things that should be in there normally and likely a recommendation to go at least to 5k or 7 k miles . I know because I have had samples test with that exact information.

But I simply like that peace of mind which holds no technical real value . Lol
