High pitched hum while driving
I bought my 2009 CX-9 Touring last week. I'm noticing that while in 6th gear, and usually while coasting or applying very light pressure to the gas pedal, you can hear a high pitched hum.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is this normal, or do I need my car looked at?

If its all wheeled drive might have the transfer case checked out. I replaced one not that long ago due to a humming while driving. It had a bad bearing inside the case.

Not sure. I'm a master tech for a mazda dealership. The car was still under powertrain warranty. Under warranty mazda just replaces the units they don't have us tear them down and replace parts.

transfer case whine and odor in cabin
09 mazda cx9 88,0000 miles. started to hear a whine between 30 and 60 mph most noticeable when throttle on or coasting down hill. also noticed sulfer smell in cabin. brought to Mazda, tech said easy diagnosis of transfer case.look on top of case you will need mirror . If you see grease oozing out of the vent on top you just bought a 1500.00 transfer case . lucky me extended warranty...

Did you ever ever find out what the issue was? I have a 2013 CX-9 That’s doing the same thing

Same as described above. High pitch hum during cruising or light acceleration in 6th gear. No noise in 5th gear. Noise is very faint. You only notice it if you’re closely paying attention. I’ve read that some dealers have told owners that this noise is normal in 6th So, I’m curious as to if anyone else has experienced this and if it’s normal or is a sign of an oncoming issue. I have a 2013 CX-9 GT with 46k miles. Recently purchased the vehicle, so I can’t say for sure if this is a new noise or if it’s always been there.
