Looking to buy 2012 CX9 - advice
Looking for some advice in buying a cx9. local party is selling a 2012 touring model with reasonably low mileage. anything specific i should look out for? common problems?
thanks! |
Is it FWD or AWD?

AWD touring model with 62k miles. I gave the owner a deposit and will be buying in a day or 2. I still have time to inspect but looks like a good vehicle. its the touring model, what are the differences between touring and grand touring? At 62k miles I don’t expect any issues, but if there is something specific to the cx9 and this year, please let me know. thanks! |

It’s AWD
been reading up on the PTU issue, should I stay clear of this vehicle? |
The majority of AWD CX-9s are reliable & trouble free. However, the PTO, or transfercase as its also know as is a weak point. I would get a pre purchase inspection carried out. If that checks out, get the transfercase oil changed ASAP for peace of mind.

I decided not to buy after talking to a Mazda tech
called my local Mazda dealership and the lead tech there was nice enough to discuss the car with me. Be in no exact words steered me away from the car. Basically said it’s not if the issue will happen, but when. Unfortunate as I really liked the car. And it still had 6 months left on the extended warranty. I just could not chance it. |
I would avoid the vehicle. I drive an '08 CX-9 AWD vehicle and my transfer case packed it in last fall. The dealer couldn't replace the transfer case with a new unit because the output shaft from the transmission had no splines left on it. They wanted to replace the transmission and the transfer case for the low cost of over $6,000. Currently exploring options with a local transmission shop who can replace the worn output shaft on the transmission and install a new transfer case. It will be a repair of over $2,000.
