Gearbox needs replacement within 1 year - used car in Sydney

I bought a used 2008 Mazda cx9 from a dealer in Sydney last January. Within a few months, there was a breakdown and it turned out to be some fuel sensor issue. The car had no warranty and I had to spend $500 to get it fixed. During towing (because of the breakdown), the tow hook snapped but thankfully the comprehensive insurance covered the repair cost.

Fast forward a few months and my mechanic now says that the gearbox needs to be replaced. This will cost me anywhere between $3500 to $5500 (used gearbox versus refurbishing existing one with all new items except body)

This is a huge cost and I don't think I will be able to pay for this. I am not sure what options do I have. There is no dealer warranty - but is it the case that the dealer should have sold me a car with acceptable quality? Or is it the case that the dealer is completely free of any responsibility once he sells a car that has no warranty.

My usage is very minimal - going to office and back which is like 4 km and that too twice a week. In the last one year, I haven't used the car for 4 months as I was overseas. I am sure that my usage hasn't created this situation.
