First short block engine swap
I did my first short block engine swap last week. After waiting for 3 weeks for the engine.
Story behind this job was that a customer comes in saying they overheated and everytime they add coolant it just ends up on the floor. Come to find out they had a cracked cylinder head due to the Turbo exhaust manifold getting too hot and cracking the head. And I was given an engine instead of just a head replacement due to the overheating fact. Also found the code P111A stating the vehicle had overheated.
I've only been at Mazda since about mid June last year and before that I've had minimal shop experience outside of high school and my uncles shop I used to help at. Basically only knew how to do oil changes and minor stuff. Anyway, I got mazda certified in my first month there and Sr. Certified within my first 4 months.
A couple months ago I actually did a full head replacement on a CX-5 for an oil leak from the head. But this whole swap only paid 10 hours while I had to literally take everything off of the old engine and put it on the new one. Took me about a total of 13 hours due to it being my first one and the turbos have way more **** on the engine than the na ones.
Anyway, just wanted to share that with the community. Everyone tells me how big of a job that is and that I should feel more accomplished, but Im honestly just glad to have my bay back. Instead of doing other jobs at other bays and bringing my tools. We have 12 bays and 3 techs. I wish I was able to just focus on the engine all day. But we are a small dealership.
Just wanted to share. Thought the pictures might help out or just the info itself.
Vehicle : 2017 CX-9 66K miles.
Has not been to the dealership since 2017 for an oil change but had a Warranty with a $100 deductible and got a brand new engine
A short block does not include the head.
"a Warranty with a $100 deductible" No such thing. The owner evidently purchased an extended service contract. Legally it is not a warranty. Note that Mazda calls theirs a VSA...Vehicle Service Agreement. In any case, Mazda North America has been providing new heads or new engines as a public relations benefit. It would kill sales if they sold cars with bad engines and did not make good on replacements.
My 2016 has been to the dealership twice...once for an oil change which they failed to do but said they did,* and once for a service campaign. I can change the oil and do the 187 point inspection as well as any tech.
*My wife brought the car home from the oil change appointment. She was given the car by the service writer after an hour wait, but not given any paperwork. Suspicious. The oil was a half quart low and dark. Very suspicious. I phoned and happened to speak with the same service writer. He assured that the work had been done. I asked him to look up the repair order--had any oil and filter been charged to that work order? He got real quiet. Extremely suspicious. You get what you inspect, not what you expect.

Sadly I do know that some dealerships really suck. But I'm glad to say my dealership has amazing techs all around and quality is out biggest thing. We only have 4 techs total and no lube rack. So everyone does great work, which I'm actually glad I'm a part of. Sorry to hear about those bad experiences as it is annoying when they waste your time and money.
Like I said "First time" I'm still learning all these terms. And yeah it was just some type of "Used Car Warranty" the dealership sells. And on the Vin inquiry we get it said "$100 deductible" I'm not sure how all that works. Like I tell everyone at work; "idk wtf is going on in there but I just come here wrench". It's not my job to do all the paper work and dealthing with customers bs. I'd rather not.

Your the kind of tech I would like working on my car. You sound like you care about quality work. I am a retired aircraft mechanic. Helos and large air craft mostly. Quality and Integrity matter
Any chance you took any pictures of the new engine's head, exhaust side,? Would be interesting to see what the redesigned head looks like compared to the original design.
And thanks for taking the time and posting this. It's great information that will help many owners.
