Coolant leak, engine replacement
If the engine check light came on then there are TDTC that can be retrieved even if the engine check light goes off. There are also counters that will show a record of issues and how many cycles before (if they even were) resolved.
Whomever diagnosis your Mazda was NOT a factory trained or ASE certified technician or mechanic.
There is no such thing on an ECU OBDII from at least 2014 to present (definitely) and technically could go all the way back to 2002 and even from 1995 that cannot be diagnosed.

Did you first look to see if your VIN fit the TSB about the complaint or any others relating to the cooling syst of your VIN?
First it helps to state the year model and miles. Also, what was the last major engine service done and what was it. And to add if close or over 100k miles when was the colling system service at what year and miles?
Then has the ECU been scanned primarily to look at the counters to see if an anomalous DTC occurred but was not active enough to generate a check engine light?
There is no real indicator where that coolant is leaking from.
You should either start to do some DIY diagnostics or take it to a shop.
The first test is pressure test the cooling system
Then do a cooling system chemical test
Then to compression of the cylinders followed up by a leak down test.
Or get lucky by completely cleaning the engine compartment and see if you8 can trace the exact location of the coolant leak?

Thank you. I own a 2017 CX-9 GT with 168,000 miles. The dealer confirmed the cylinder head is cracked and obviously they wont cover it. The car still runs with engine shaking more than normal and coolant leaking but there is no overheating as of yet. Dealer tried to sell me a 2025 Cx-5 but compared to my 2017 CX-9 the drive felt like a big downgrade so Im thinking about replacing my engine at an independent shop. What confuses me is that there are two different part numbers for this engine.
PYZ3-02-300E for 2018-2023
PYY7-02-300N for 2016-2017
so when the dealer inputs my Vin only the PYY7-02-300N comes up but I thought the engines were identical between these vehicles. And unfortunately the PYY7-02-300N is about a 1000$ more expensive. So I’ve sent an email to both Mazda Canada and Mazda USA to see if the engines are interchangeable.

I have a 2016 CX-9 Signature that does fall within the parameters of the TSB. During an out of town trip it started overheating. I stopped, allowed it to cool and added water (didn’t have access to coolant). By the time we arrived in Dallas it was overheating again. I stopped at a NTB facility. Several hundred dollars later, the supposedly bad radiator was replaced. On the return trip the car started overheating yet again. With a number of stops, I nursed it home. It sat for several months until I received notification of the TSB from Mazda. I had it towed to the Mazda dealer and they said it wasn’t covered because there was also a mixing of oil with the coolant. I’m currently having an independent shop replace the engine. I’ll look into why the mixture but suspect the overheating may have caused a blown head gasket. If so, I’ll pick up my fight with Mazda. As much as I liked this CX-9, I’m truly frustrated.
Sorry to read but both the last 2 responses are not going to be covered by Mazda. But you can alway try.
