Looks like I get to join a new club! Or is this more of a support group? Just got the quote from my dealership to replace the head on my 2019 CX9, $9500. Sooooo, I found a 2021 engine, still in a rear ended CX9 that runs, for under $3k. Has 50k miles on it. No warranty, but mine made it 190k miles before it failed. I'll have my CX9 paid off in 2025 and it probably wont be worth the money I'm getting ready to put in to it. It's been a good run. Glad to know that I'm not the only one.

Default Same problem.

Just took it in for overheating and got diagnostic and they quoted me $6000+. Waiting for Mazda USA case manager to call back. Around 74k 2019 cx9. There’s long Reddit post on this with TSB and class action investigation links.

I'm doing two things for the potential leak problem in my 2016.
1) I keep the display on the window showing the coolant temperature. In my car the needle is always a needle's width to the left of the center line. If the needle ever reaches that line I'll stop at the first safe spot and check the coolant level. If down, go to step 2.
2) I carry an emergency kit. It has a gallon of coolant, a pint of water, and Bar's Leaks Radiator Stop Leak tablets. I phoned the tech support line at Bar's and asked which product would be best for our situation of the cracked head. The guy sounded very knowledgeable and recommended the tablets. He said to stop and let the engine cool. Crush the tablets, dissolve in the bottle of water, add to the radiator, top off with the coolant, and more coolant or water if needed. Follow the label instructions. If the tablets don't seal the leak I also have a bottle of Block Seal Coolant Leak Fix, just to get home.

The next stop will be at a repair shop. I'll use a good independent shop as my first stop for a replacement head. It is most important to find the problem and take action before the engine gets so hot that the head warps and coolant gets past the head gasket and into the engine oil passages. I also bought an extended repair contract at a very good price offered by my credit union. I usually don't buy them, but in this case it might be wise. The fine print in the contract does not exclude a cracked head leaking coolant.

Do we know if the problem is from the design of the head or from excessive manufacturing tolerances? In any case it should be Mazda's problem, not ours.

(Tolerance is the amount of allowable error. Clearance is how much space is needed for oil flow. For example, bearings need clearance for oil flow. Tolerance is how much the clearances can vary.)

Hi Everyone - forum thread has been hopeful. curious what possible solutions i may have on my issue.

Two months ago the coolant leak issue came up on my 2018 Cx9 turbo (65k miles - note i am out of warranty as well).after talking to mazda corporate and getting my car towed to my dealership, they agree to care of the crack cylinder TSB issue for $500. i was ecstatic that this big issue was going to taken care of by corporate with very little out of pocket.

A few issues arose at the dealership during servicing unfortunatly. They said the exhaust manifold needs to be replaced ($1700) and the car isnt running right and i need a new turbo ($2300). the dealership submitted to corporate to take care of the costs but mazda corporate warrany dept denied covering the costs of those fixes. it feels like all of these issues stem from the TSB issue and corporate should take care of it but theyre not.

Im still paying the car off and i believe this isnt a smart financial decision to put 5k into this car with the possibility of another issue arising in the future. Are there any levers i can pull to get mazda corporate to offer more or how to get out of this car with a trade?

This is a lot of money and i just want to know what other options are out there!

Mazda denied our claim (with cylinder head assembly replacement) and shortly after got another service quote from the dealership that turbo needs to be repaired. $6100 for cylinder head and $1900 for turbo.
I feel that class action suit is the only option at this point. I’ve left a msg to case manager but doubt they will do anything.

I read your 3 responses. Nothing in them provided any detail about your Mazda. Year miles and service done up to your point of complaint.
So to post that MAZDA denied your service under Warranty or any TSB that are generally not completely read and fully understood by owners or DIY how are we to know or provide any advice for you?

The service estimate you received are for the most part accurate for USA and Canada based Mazda dealership none warranty service customers
But if you are actually from Cali Columbia who knows then? lol

2019 Mazda cx-9
about 74k
got 3 warranty (2 of them being the side mirror, infotainment spidering) repairs done, one simple recall done,
Fender, mound replacement (don’t even know how this came off), purge valve replacement outside the warranty 4 months ago, all done at the dealership. Routine maintenance, break, rotor replaced few months ago.

infotainment glass spidering just outside the warranty AGAIN (under 3 yrs, couple thousand miles over mileage) (quoted $2000+)
Northern California.

purge valve - rough idling. Felt like car was gonna die while foot on the breaks. Took it to dealership they couldn’t find anything after diagnostic. Next day car stopped at a light. Brief engine light or all the warning lights came on before dying. Towed it to dealership. They had hard time getting the code again. By this time I’ve already searched for answers online and purge valve was likely the known problem, mentioned it to them. This was 4 months ago exactly.

I did not state this was under the warranty. Original posting was outside the warranty. So are many people with same problem. I didn’t feel the need to go into details as several cases I read had similar situations.

Never did I imagine engine going bad under 5yrs especially for Japanese car when I bought it. Had cars 10+ years never one engine problem.
spending $8000 within 5yrs of owning it seems very unreasonable with no accidents.
