I just bought 2023 cx-9 touring, should i be worry about this issue or new models does not have this problem.
If it is what did they change to prevent the problem.
Thanks

YOu new MAZDA is covered with the WARANTY . If you simply enjoy it and not worry but do the normal things, watch, listen and smell all the normal things when driving any vehicle for anything that is not unusual or to you personally sounds different. That would be the time to go see the MAZDA dealer and have your Mazda looked at as well it will become documented. In other words, don't worry about things that have not happened and that you really have little control of a random event or in the case of information posted in this thread's random vehicles. The shear production numbers of your model Mazda are in your favor of nothing unusual happening!
Or you can ask the "8" ball!

Default 2017 Cx9 40k miles

Took mine into the shop today. Originally took it to another mechanic that told me it was a radiator leak.
mine was coolant smell for about 2 weeks but no visual signs of a leak then overheating with low res levels. When I mentioned warranty he said yea take it to mazda. So glad I did cause they text me back saying mazda will replace engine. Didn’t really talk my options more so that they were just going to do it. I’ll call to get full rundown tomorrow and post updates here. I’m assuming cause I have such low mileage that I should be covered under warranty. Crazy that this is even a thing. Other than normal maintenance I have not had any issues and I love the car. They gave me a brand new 2023 GT with all bells and whistles. I almost want to trade in lol.

hope all goes well with the others posting here. I’m pulling for y’all

My question was whatever cause this thing happening is it fixed on my 2023 or has a same chance as prior years?

According to USA TB it affects VINs made 2016-2020.

I can understand a few "bad apples" in the bunch in terms of our 2016+ CX-9s. Love this car and meticulously maintained it. My coolant leak was nothing visible, meaning no dried splash spots or liquid on the floor. First thing I noticed was rough idling intermittently and occasionally the engine would die (only at stops). Then a few days later, got a Engine Hot notification. Mind you, never got a check engine light. Pulled over right away and observed my coolant reservoir was completely empty. I happen to have 2 new bottles of FL22 coolant as I was literally going to do a coolant flush soon. I almost had to use the two bottles to fill it back up.

Out of concern, I took it to my buddy's car repair shop. He did a pressure test and stated there is no external leak, but I am losing pressure hence the coolant is leaking somewhere internally. I also noticed by exhaust has a funny smell and blows white especially on cold starts. His thought was maybe the turbo was cracked somewhere and the coolant was burning through the exhaust or crack in the head. From reading various post, even from other Mazda forums, it seems to be a cracked head.

I am thinking of giving the dealer a call tomorrow, to see what options I have. Sounds like a new motor is needed ugh. I am definitely out of warranty, but if there is a technical bulletin number out there please share. I will update with my progress as I get them. Hopefully my story can help others. When my mechanic friend said to search forums, I admit I was doubtful there would be known issue like this especially from Mazda and supposedly not sharing any Ford parts. Another option I pondered, depending on the cost to replace the engine, would be to sell the car to Carmax or similar online sellers and wait for the CX-90. TIA
Okay, updating my post and process to get my motor replaced. As I mentioned previously, my car was way past it's warranty but the service guy at my local Mazda dealership (Escondido, CA) went to bat for me. He had his master technician confirm the issue noted in the TSB mentioned by @PTguy (MC-10215280-0001.pdf).

The total cost to replace the engine (top and bottom) was $10,827.51.

Luckily, Mazda only asked me to cover $1,000 of it. It took roughly 20 days from time of approval to completion of engine replacement. I wasn't particularly looking forward to getting into a new car especially in the current car market. So brand new engine, but only a 12K mile warranty. I do want to note that my original Turbo was re-used which makes sense. I think it makes a difference on the service advisor at least from what I have read on various forums. Good luck to anyone who encountered this unfortunate design flaw.

Thus the "partial engine replacement" noted on the TSB. Parts not affected by the loss of coolant will be transferred to the new "partial engine."

What is the process to inspect the head area? Does it require removing engine parts to inspect?

Default Did they día this w more recent years?

Hi! I’m researching cars to buy and really fell in love w the CX9. I see that they changed some things in 2019. Do you know if that fixed this issue? Ps. Sorry you’ve had to deal with it!
