Default Air Conditioning/Heat Blowing Inconsistently

Recently, my air con. (or heat) will stop blowing in the front, but continue blowing in the back. Minutes later - and for no intervening reason - it will start blowing again in the front, accompanied by a slight whirring noise from the general area of the glove compartment. Guesses?

It could be also caused by a dirty condenser/evaporator.
