2015 CX-9 Engine Swap with 2012 CX-9
Hello!
just looking to get some thoughts.
have a 2015 CX-9 with 200xxx kms on it. Last summer we had a water pump failure that caused severe overheating in the engine. We haven’t driven it since the incident but about 6 months ago it still idles.
wanting to get it running again for the winter. Can be pretty challenging to find another 2015 engine but I recently found a 2012 CX-9 engine within a drivable distance. From what I’ve read since the 2012 is also the Mazda MZI 3.7L it should be pretty easy (for an experienced mechanic) to swap in, aside from a few mismatched sizes of hoses and stuff.
anyone heard of an earlier model CX-9 engine going into a later model?
do you think the 2012 would work just fine for my 2015?
any big speed bumps I/my mechanic might run into in this process?
other affordable engines that might work just as well or better? (I’m aware the engine style is a 3.7L cyclone v6, Ford F-150s from 2011-14 are the same and are way more readily available in Alberta and are cheaper as a result)
any other thoughts or ideas?
cheers!

Are you sure the Ford blocks are the same? I am in a similar boat at the moment. Ford 3.7l are about half the price of Mazda. I have searched everywhere for confirmation that I could use a Ford block to rebuild with.
Thanks
Thanks
Hi guys.
You seem like very knowledgeable individuals,
just reaching out as I am an experienced mechanic and im in the same boat and some time has gone by. Have you guys figure out this situation? What did you end up doing? Any luck with a better alternative.
I have done extensive research on this and can't come to any concrete answers.

Welcome to the forum
Your upcoming project will have a few challenges, I would only consider the ECU effect on whatever engine you decide to get? But it would appear that you will be the pioneer in this project and thus become the experienced one at its conclusion?
I hope you keep us updated on this adventure, it read interesting!
