2010 CX9 AWD - FWD light on

Hello all.
My cx9 grand touring AWD has a noise coming from the rear of the vehicle (passenger side). It sounds like a wheel bearing issue since it is sort of mild rumbling.. Not quite grinding. I have had bearing replaced on this vehicle before and it sounds similar but not quite. The question is would a wheel bearing issue cause the FWD light to turn on.? I can start the car and it is not one but as soon as I start driving it comes on.

I guess I am concerned about it being gear box or transmission related. I did have the gear box replaced at around 90k miles due to cracking of the gear box. This was a known issue and mazda replaced it for free. But I am worried this might be related to that.

Could a bad wheel bearing cause the FWD light to come on.?

Thanks much
Dave

Antilock brakes and the switch from 2WD to AWD run off wheel speed sensors. If you have a wheel bearing starting to fail, yes, it could turn on the FWD light. Get it checked

Thanks much for the reply. I have an appointment tomorrow morning.

Well I took it in this morning and the 2 rear wheel bearings are bad. The car has 121k on it. Odd because I had one of the rear bearings replaced 50k miles ago. Odd it did not last. Mechanic says bad design.

Also rear brakes down to nothing. I expected that. Cost for all of this is $1800. Now if I did not have new tires put on 6 months ago and the replaced transfer case last summer (due to that well known issue with these cx9s and cracked transfer cases) I would not get it fixed and trade it in. But I think I will spend the 1800.

What do you all think? How many miles do you have on your cx9?

Thanks
Dave

$1800 seems quite high. I suggest getting a few quotes first.

Thanks much.. Actually, I got some more bad news. They were going to start the job to replace the bearings and do the brakes but I asked them to troubleshoot the 4WD light first because I recall reading somewhere that the 4WD light could point to a bigger problem with the transmission. So they tested with the computer and it said something about a wire that was ripped off the coupler/differential causing the problem with the light. He told me that I should start shopping for another car because that job would cost $ 2500 on top of the $1800 for the bears and brakes. So he was saying it was electrical and not mechanical. I find it hard to believe that the wire underneath would cause a $ 2500 job. Is it a closed system ?

Anyway, I am taking it to Mazda Friday morning to get a second opinion. The guy I had look at this has been great in the past but I want Mazda to look at it.

Any thoughts? I know the car has 121K on it but I was really not ready to purchase another car.

Thanks again for your input.
Dave

Unfortunately it looks like the issue is error code P1887 as referenced in the following thread.

In my case the wire broke right off so it looks like differential needs to be replaced

At 121,000 miles, its time to sit down & reassess the financial viability of your vehicle.

If you can fix the Diff wiring then great.
