Default 1WPE-14-302 versus 1WPY-14-302

Hey Guys, so I have a 20 MX5 GT that I have purchased the OEM 1WPE-14-302 filters for. I also picked up a 20 CX9 GT last year and just doing the oil change on it for the first time today. The previous two oil changes were done by dealer for free. Anyways for the CX9 I bought the OEM 1WPY-14-302 filters for. Today when I changed the oil for the CX9 I accidentally used the 1WPE filter. Looks identical as far as I can remember from the old one coming out of the CX9. I just realized the mistake. I know I bought the 1WPY because it said that was for the Turbo Sky Activ engines while the 1WPE was for Non Turbo engines.

So my question is am I OK or should I change it out and put the correct one in the CX9? I looked around but could not find an answer. Thanks.

if you’re asking if the oil filters are the same for the cx5 and cx9 then the answer is yes. I have a CX5, CX9 and a 6 and they all use the same filter

No, I don't have a CX5. The MX5 is a Miata which has a NA (normally aspirated) engine while the CX9 has a Turbo. Mazda calls for NA and Turbo to use different filters. After reading up more on it Mazda said that using the wrong filter can damage the engine so I am just gonna replace it with the correct one today. Don't wanna chance it especially when the CX9 is still under warranty.

My apologies! I thought it was maybe a typo since you were posting on a Mazda forum but since you mention a cx-9 it makes sense.

I did some research and found probably the same info you did, but that makes me confused. I’ve done all my own oil changes for the Mazda’s in our household and they all use the same oil filter if you get them from the parts house (I switch between Mobil 108 or K&N HP1008)

im sure you found this but this thread talks about the difference in the oil filters (they reference a single vs double band): https://mazdas247.com/forum/t/oil-fi...ces.123878135/

Hey man, no worries and absolutely no apologies needed. When I bought this CX9 used it came with 2 free maintenances which was basically and oil change and rotation. I was friendly with the service manager at the dealer and one day I was talking to him and he mentioned out of the blue about the different oil filters and when I was about to do an oil change for the CX9 I remembered that and looked into it and bought the right one. However I was not thinking when I was doing the actual oil change and used the filter I had for the Miata. Then I realized the mistake. I searched and basically concluded what you saw. I know aftermarket like K&N has it down that their filter works on both the NA and Turbo. But the CX9 is still under warranty so I would hate to say something happen on the road and I had it towed back and for whatever reason they deny warranty because I used the wrong filter. So I went ahead and changed it and just did the oil change for the Miata as well so I re-used that filter so nothing was wasted. Just a pain to have to do the extra work. LOL.

Yeah, I saw that link you sent me last night but no one really had an answer to whether it is safe to mix and match the Mazda OEM filters or not. :-)

After market oil filter manufacturers will have their research department check compatibility of OEM filters to what they offer. If top brand oil filters companies have the same single part number for both the Mazda oil filters then they did not find any technical or service deference’s between them . This likely means that the OE simply may have wanted for their reasons to have 2 (or more) part numbers for inventory or manufacturing purposes . Mazda farms out many of their parts like some oil filters to independent manufacturing companies in different countries.
