Clunks on full lock.
Our CX7 started to clunk in tight roundabouts, that's right turns here. The King Pin may have lost it's grease. Now seems to include a clunk from the centre or left. Is it likely to just be the suspension? Since it only happens when the wheels are turned hard right I wonder if the tie-rods are involved? The wheel has little free play and it still handles fine.
Steering noises getting worse. This unit has done about 150 k's. Is it normal to rebuild the steering tie-rods etc. at this stage? Real rumble on a left turn, like a bearing noise, makes me wonder just what is going on. Help!
Gary: all the joints are close to each other. You really have to get down and dirty to find the source.
Check the wheel bearings first. jack it up and secure it with a jack stand. Grab the wheel at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and push it back and forth. You should have no play.
Grab the wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions and wiggle. This time pay attention to the outer tie rod ends and to the bellows going into the rack. If the outer tie rod ends have no play and the bellows appears to move a bit , but not the steering wheel, then the inner tie rod end may be shot.
The struts can also make noises. Wiggling the steering wheel with alight touch to feel for feedback can also reveal wear in the steering.
If the noise only occurs when at the endpoints then it is likely the power steering pump. It is advised not to keep the steering all the way to the stop. Turn the wheel back by half an inch or so (13mm if you are on the metric system).
And yes, 150 000 km is enough to wear things out depending on the road and driving conditions.

Finally decided to try replacing the wheel bearings and put it up on a hoist. Removed the left side bearing and it looked fine. Just replaced the grease and went to put it back. found the brake pad had a thick rim of hard white plastic. looked like I'd picked up a plastic bag or some such. Chipped that off and reassembled. Took it for a test run and hardly a peep. More I drove it the better it got. I'll keep the wheel bearings for spares.
The noise had been so bad on turns my wife had been refusing to drive the car for fear the wheel would fall off. Could have cost a fortune. Thanks to everyone for their input.
