Wrong fuel indication

Hi everyone,

I have CX5 2012 and a couple of months ago, a day after a periodic maintenance, my car stopped on the highway in the middle of a drive! Nothing worked. No gas was streaming in the pump. With the anratia power I barely pulled to the side of the road and the police rescued me by pulling the car to a safer place. I was unable to start the car.

Scary. The fuel gauge showed 1/4 tank.

Taken to the garage, the car did manage to start now, they replaced the gas flow meter, but apparently after two weeks it happened again to my spouse.

Needless to say this is awfully dangerous, the situation i went into on the highway was risky as hell.

Since then it happened once more (total of 3 times) and still the garage can't find the reason.

It seems to happen when the fuel gauge shows about 1/4 tank, yet the issue is not the fuel pump (which they claim is fine), nor is it the flow gauge which was already replaced in vain.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Sounds like it's going into "limp home mode". This happens when the ECU reads a serious fault code like an engine misfire. The dealer should be able to read this on his diagnostic equipment and get to the source of the problem. Are you using a Mazda dealer or an independent garage?

Thank you. Using a Mazda authorized dealer. They have no clue thus far, what's the issue.

I believe the fuel tank in the 4WD version has two fuel level sensors in the tank due to the hump in the tank from the driveshaft running thru.

I've had a few RX-8's with the twin sensor setup having 1 sensor play up causing a false reading on the fuel gauge.

This causes the vehicle to run out of fuel with 1/4 of a tank showing on the gauge.

Something to get checked.

Hi,

did you fix your problem? I have same issue... My car is CX-5, 2.2 Skyactiv-D, AWD - 2014.

My fuel indicator was showing about 1/4 of tank and car stopped. I refill fuel - I was able to put only 40 liters of fuel and tank was full. In my opinion fuel indicator is fine, but there is another problem.

I know, that our fuel tank has like two compartments. Something is responsible to drain fuel from one compartment to the another, and I don't know what it is. I found some service manuals showing fuel tank in CX-5:

There are some 'Fuel gauge sender units - main and sub' in fuel tank:

But I can't see pump or something that can fill fuel from one compartment to another - can some one help? :)
