Default Where to get a new key fob

Still climbing the learning curve for our new CX-5 Grand Touring, and I'm thinking it would be good to get a third key fob before we need it.

I'm sure I can go to my dealer and get one, but I'm equally sure there are less expensive ways to go about it.

I see Mazda key fobs are available online, but the process requires getting someone locally--a locksmith or my Mazda dealer--to program the fob so it works with the car.

Has anyone here gone through the process of getting a new key fob? If so, what are your lessons learned, and knowing what you know now, would you just bite the bullet and go to the dealer or do it another way?

Also, a metal tag with a five-digit number came attached to one of the two key fobs that came with our new CX-5. Anyone know what that's for?

Many thanks,

Milt Baker, Pompano Beach, FL

From the owner's manual:
Key code number plate
A code number is stamped on the plate
attached to the key set; detach this plate
and store it in a safe place (not in the
vehicle) for use if you need to make a
replacement key (auxiliary key).
Also write down the code number and
keep it in a separate safe and convenient
place, but not in the vehicle.
If your key (auxiliary key) is lost, consult
an Authorized Mazda Dealer, and have
your code number ready.

Why do you feel that you need a third fob?

With spares aboard my boats, I've always gone by this rule:

TWO IS ONE, AND ONE IS NONE.

I always feel safer having a couple of spares! Your mileage may vary.

Back in my day, you got a key made at the hardware store for a couple bucks. Today, nearly $300 at the dealer.

Back in the day even amateur car thieves could hot wire and steal a car in ten seconds.....for free.
