Ticking/knocking sound - 2018 cx-5 gt
Hi All,
my 2018 CX-5 GT has been recently making this ticking/knocking noise when starting the engine cold. It fades as the engine warms and eventually stops. Either way it seems a bit loud to be considered normal. The car is up to date on service and I have 33,434 miles on it. Any idea what’s causing this sound? Is it critical? Tried attaching a video of it. Not sure if it will go through...Please help.
Thanks!

What you're describing sounds like a hydraulic Cam follower/lifter/tappet that is bleeding down. It ticks until it pumps back up with oil taking up the space between the rocker and the cam lobe. I just don't know if our 2.5L engines have solid or hydraulic tappet's. If they're solid, there is a an adjustment for that gap. Either way, it "sounds" (pun intended) like a dealer service/warranty issue.
Without phiscally hearing it there is no way anyone can give you a clean bill of health to continue driving it.
The type of oil pump and the * lifter (*by many names i.e HLA ) you have pumps them up almost by the rotation of the engine produced by the starter. The mileage does not normally associate these engine with a *lifter that has problems. However without clearly hearing it in the real world I would suggest having a Certified Auto Technician listen and give you there evaluation.
