Exclamation Thermostat - coolant level

Hi Everybody,

I am wishing you all the best from Romania.

I encountered a problem with my 2014 CX5 lately.

If you D0N'T want to GET BORED skip this part:
Winter is here and the temperatures outside make you turn the heating on the inside. I was traveling to the airport which is for me a 30km drive so I could notice the behavior of the car like it follows. It was a rainy day and i switched the windscreen defrost and waited. When you start the defrosting the AC is on. The car was blowing the cold air from the inside through the radiators and the AC was on so the result was me freezing. I turned off the defrosting, I turned off the AC the heating was set to 29 Degrees and the result after 40 minutes of driving was me freezing and a windscreen not in its best cleans. Just about to arrive at the airport and the heating started to appear and heat up a little. Waiting for the pickup the car cooled and I started the same story on my way back home.

HERE i get to the CONCLUSIONS
Back to the shop (Auto repair shop) the guys assured me that I have to replace the thermostat. They started to take it off and around 0,2-0,3 litters of coolant were spilled out of the car. After mounting the part they added 3 litters of coolant straight in the radiator even if the coolant tank was at max level. After 15 minutes of engine revved at 3000 rpm they decided to investigate the inside heating radiator because it was still freezing inside. the took out the hose going to the inside heater and nothing leaked. So they added 4.5 more liters of coolant and water and the total scared me. They added 7.5 liters in total and that is exactly what the car system requires. So my first question
1. Does this mean my engine wasn't actually cooled at all with coolant but just by air?

It's a good fact I replaced the oil and filters just one week ago (and they claim they checked the coolant and it was OK) and I wouldn't do it again but based on this the second question
2. Where and when did the coolant go out? (side question, how did it managed to survive the summer?)

and my most important question because I face this problem
3. Does that situation affect the consumption / mileage?

Please let me know if this happen to anybody else or it's just me.

All the best to everybody.
