Replacement engine - only option?
Hi all
new guy here. Bought a 2013 cx5 only 6m ago and it’s been a bit of a disaster. 99k miles 2.2 diesel sportnav auto
the head gasket has gone, as of yesterday there is now a whine/scream from the turbo (does their car have 1 or 2 turbos?), since we’ve owned it the mpg has been awful. Mostly around town driving granted but the occasional stretch of legs and yet we get 24mpg
the inside heater doesn’t work either. Blocked pipes we think but I understand major job to rip the dash out to fix
right now it’s on the drive and I’m at a loss with what to do with it. Sell it for scrap and get what, £3k for it at best? Repair the current engine (and live with that crappy 24mpg) at god knows what expense if the block/head is cracked, turbos are gone
or do I try and replace the engine? Not that easy to find (it would make sense to find one including the turbos and everyone seems to take them off/charge additional) and I worry about the quality of work with what I find on eBay for these sorts of things.
trying to work out what makes economical sense here. I think if someone told me I could fix all of the above for <£3k I’d bite their hand off
Any advice appreciated, any decent garage recommendations too (I’m in Surrey)
I’m an optimistic guy and love all things cars, but really can’t help thinking this maybe one for the pile 😢

I can only say what I would do based on my financial situation and past experience.
Only did the replacement engine once in my 50+ years of driving on VW which at the time was very easy and cheap.
As for a 10-year-old vehicle, unless it's a classic, is not something I would invest high value repairs in. like a new engine.
Especially if you have to pay the cost to have someone install it.
I'd junk it and purchase a "newer" gas powered CX-5 or another brand/model vehicle you can afford that would meet your needs.
It will likely save you money in the long run if not outright.
But as I said that's my opinion.

It’s an expensive repair, but the price of 2nd hand cars these days meaning to lose a bunch on this for scrap would leave me in a financial position that doesn’t offer much!
I’ve hired a car for 2 weeks to help me think this one over. I’ve got a reliable garage I’ve used a few times before, let me talk to them see what other options they can give me
thanks all. Watch out for those pesky head gaskets!

Sound like you bought a
vehicle that had existing problems and got stung .It sounds like the seller may have knew it had a bad head gasket and used a block sealer to cover it up .That is more than likely what caused the blockage in your heater core . Sell it for whatever you can get for it ,and don't look back. The cost of a major repair like this is always more than you think ,and once you start you are in too deep to back out. If it is financially possible buy a new , Mazda, Toyota, or Honda with a warrantee you will be better off in the end. Some times your first loss is your cheapest loss. Just asking , did you have a qualified Mazda mechanic check it out B4 you bought it ?

Dont forget all the extra parts that need to be replaced when you undertake a project in this condition and year vehicle.
i.e.:
Hoses
belts
engine and transmission mounts
fluids
water pump
thermostat
battery
gaskets
PCV valve
misc fasteners
possible some suspension parts
the list goes on
These are things to add an estimated total to the project.
I would also get an estimate of FLAT rate and not hourly. To do the job based on hourly rate would take an hour just to estimate it and then it would need to be revised in most cases as the job progresses. That generally means unexpected higher cost.
Good Luck with your project and what you decide. It would be nice you keep up updated on this possible project it does have the interest factor!

In Australia. 6 weeks with no car.
There is no such thing as
"CAN"T FIND THE PROBLEM" with those of us that are trained.

Or start your own thread with your problem and we can Q&A or make suggestion what you may be able to do.
Because it is can be complex it is not fair to use this thread for you problem and it really is very off topic.
