Default Rear Wheel Well has no protection

I just bought a 2014 CX5 Touring and I noticed that there's no plastic in the rear wheel well. Is this right? It seems like the cloth is going to get wrecked over time.

This is the material Mazda has been using for some years on various models. Has to do with sound deadening.

Apparently this material is quite durable. I wish they put it in the front wheel wells too, I've found it rather easy to clean.

I have the same material on our 2009 Altima. After 4 years it's still fine

My 2006 Atenza wagon had cloth type lining in the rear wheel arches, no sign of wear.

Thumbs down Paint it black?

Just now noticed this on my new 2015 CX-5. Came here and was relieved to know that it is just fine. My brother suggested for "cosmetic" purposes, to spray them with VHT Vinyl and Fabric spray. What do you think?

It wouldn't hurt to spray a liner into the wheel arch. Just make you do proper preparation.

What do I think? Quite honestly, I think that's about the lamest thing I've ever read on one of these forums. The material Mazda uses in the rear wheel wells of the CX-5 (and other Mazda vehicles) is designed to perform the normal functions of this component as well as deaden sound of rocks and debris that are kicked up by the tires. This material has been used for several years by Mazda and several other Japanese manufacturers for the same purpose. Just leave it alone and enjoy the car!
