Question Door handle push-buttons not working; Key warning light on dash is red

Hello. We bought a used 2016 CX-5 and noticed that the push-buttons on the door handles and rear liftgate (referred to in the manual as the "request switch") aren't working to unlock the doors, and the Key Warning Light on the dash is solid red. Both key fobs work fine to lock and unlock the doors, and we replaced the batteries in both just to be sure that wasn't the problem. There's no problem starting the car - just the red light on the dash and the inoperative push-buttons. Any ideas that would save us a trip to the dealer would be appreciated. Thanks much.

Will need to be scanned for fault codes.

Default Same Exact Issue

Hi,

Please let me know when you have an update from the dealer. I have the same problem, in the same car and year. I've just had the car battery replaced as well as the battery in both key fobs. No change. I can't help feeling that something just needs to be reset. The first time i replaced one of the key fobs, with an old 2025 battery, the problem disappeared completely. Red light was gone and all request switches worked. When i actually bought brand new batteries, the issue returned.

Sure. It was fixed at a Mazda dealer. It's my son's car and he brought it in, so I didn't get to talk to them directly. The repair documentation says "tech re-calibrated internal antenna and reprogrammed both keys. No more light present and all buttons work as intended". They also told my son there was a "wire disconnected on the passenger side", but that's not listed on the repair paperwork. Fortunately for us the car was bought through Carvana and was within their 90 day warranty period, so the charge was covered and my son didn't pay much attention to understanding exactly what had happened. The charge to Carvana was $280. Good luck resolving the issue on your end.

If any of the switches(x3) or antennas (x4) are faulty or disconnected, the whole system stops working.

Scanning for fault codes would straight away point to an issue in/on the Passenger door.

I had the same problem and one day I had a problem with the passenger window motor (unrelated), so I removed the door trim to fix it to discover that the plug for the keyless antenna right behind the door handle is not plugged in. As soon it was plugged in, the red key warning went off and the request switches worked normally afterwards. I don't know how it was detached! Maybe my passengers always slamming the door and that made it, or a previous repair was don and it was forgotten unplugged. So my advice is to check all keyless antenna and comfirm all is firmly plugged. Hope this will help.
