Default Difference between years.

I stopped by the dealer to get some parts yesterday and they had a 2022 CX-5 similar to mine. It's a Premium compared to my Touring and it has leather and a sunroof that mine doesn't have. It's got the NA 2.5 and basically is the same as mine current car but a little more plush. I know the front has changed a little in design. I'm not sure I like the new look. What else has changed over the last 6 years?

My car still has lots of life left, but I like sun roofs as you can open them and cool it off quick. I'm thinking of either selling my current ride or trading it in and leasing a new one. Any comments? I can probably get near what I paid for mine when I bought it and the dealer doesn't have a "Market adjustment" charge on it.

So yours is what year? 2017? The '22 has updates, but is basically the same car as your '17 mechanically. Mazda says it has improved the structure a bit and smoothed the transmission, but who really knows. Some of the biggest improvements are the infotainment system and if you want more power, the turbo motor which also comes with bigger front brakes. I say drive a 22 and see if it still feels like a fit. Jump to a higher trim level so you get the options you like. Or try the CX-50 if you want something similar, but with a fresh design.

I agree with everything said in the prior post. Mazda shuffles the features in the trim level each year and even within trim levels in the last 2 years due to shortage. Look at the new models and carefully look to see which level meets your needs. Don't forget to look at the CX30 and CX50.

I believe the biggest change is the infotainment system. I prefer the old system but most seem to prefer the new one.

It could be a great time for an upgrade.

Mine is a 2016 and the electronics were the one down side according to Consumer Reports when I looked it up. I don't NEED more power as I'm surprised I haven't gotten a ticket already. I talked to a salesman about the CX-50 and he said it's more towards less than perfect roads. It has a lower roof and higher ground clearance. The GF and I are both 6 foot so a lower roof is not ideal.

I'm happy with how well the car has held up and performed. It's still a solid little car. Outside of some maintenance coming up, it doesn't really need anything. I'm just getting the itch to change things. I haven't sat in the '22, but I like the center console better. I like the front end design on my '16 better though. It has more character.

my $.02

I just bought a 2022. I too really like moonroofs. If you look at the 'preferred' package.. It is the standard 'S' model but with some nicer features added in. The 'preferred' package is third from the lowest in the line. but it delivers everything I wanted (although I do admit I like the electric hatch lift on my wife's car) For me, the notable things that I really wanted are - auto dimming mirror with homelink, power seat with memory, moonroof, dual zone AC, decent electronics with AA. It came with leather, I haven't ever had leather before.. but I do like it. There is a lot of convenience built in for $29,500. For me it was the sweet spot.

The one thing I had to give up on is getting an interior other than black. Black is extremely common in the CX-5.. I prefer a grey or something a little lighter where you can actually see in the car without a spotlight. (haha that actually isn't an exaggeration for a Scion TC I had in the past).. Anyway I am super pleased with the combination of features in my CX-5.

The days of picking and choosing options are essentially gone.. If a car on the lot doesn't have what you want (assuming the dealer has many to choose from), you might have to wait months for a new arrival.

The 2016 year saw a change in transmissions part way through the model year.
Late '16s have a Mazda transmission; the earlier part of the year Mazda was using a
Tramco(sp) transmission they purchased from Nissan. It has a troubled reputation so
keep an eye on it. Change the fluid when it time (50K miles).

My 2¢

I think mine is a late '16. I have the dealer service it but I've never had an issue with the transmission. Really, considering how I push the car, it's holding up well. I go through brakes quick, but even there, they are lasting longer than brakes on other stuff I've got.

There are some engineering changes for the 17MY. Mazda changed suspension, steering, and sound insulation on 2nd gen. There are underbody panels for better aero and reduced noise, and reduced corrosion. Mazda added laminated glass for the front side windows for noise reduction. Different bumpers, lights, and panels. After the refresh in 17, very few changes other than the introduction of the turbo motor for the '19 MY, and the ultra rare U.S. diesel model, until the restyle for '22, which is still nearly identical mechanically to the '17 model.

17 was a complete model change as far as Mazda is concerned (but we really know it was just a reskin and new interior) like the Tacoma and Frontier did for their current "new" generations. Of course Mazda made modifications to the suspension and many other areas at the same time. Heck, they are saying they made significant improvements to the transmission, body structure and suspension for '22 as well (which I seriously doubt).

Here's a video discussing some of the engineering changes.
Also to add, a laminated windshield and double door seals were added in 17.
