bronze I would dismiss your concerns abt some cylinders wearing more than others. Having been in the game for a very long time can say modern engines don't get cylinder bore wear like the older ones from the 60's to the 90's. Lets not go back earlier. I have pulled newer engines apart after 200,000kms and the bore still has the cross hatch honing marks and no cylinder lip at the top of the bore. I would think the manufacturers and there are many have put a lot of R&D into CD and the ECU software to accommodate things like cylinder bore oil accumulation which does occur when a cylinder has low compression. From my basic engineering background it takes X amount of power to move an object (a car) from point A to B with little to no variation in power required. That seems to now come from the working cylinders now working harder to achieve the outcome. A small engine working harder is more efficient than a large loper. I find all this technology very interesting have served on our local SAE committee for quiet a few years with one member working for Mazda at the time we discussed all this Skyactive technology around 20 years ago so I guess they have had some serious time to perfect it.

You would wonder why auto manufacturers don’t use total seal oil and compression rings by now . The pistons also need a diet for the small size they are really heavy . At some point the short block I am building will have better long time updated then even the 2026 engines. The hard are not to bad but the one on my Mazda did need about 6 hours of porting and casting clean up and port blending. Again by now this could have easily been achieved at the plant given its all now done old programed head finishing machines. Also Mazdas choice in antiquated valve springs . So needless to say the engineers are not always what some vision them to be and I will state that I am sure some process and choice of parts were rejected by the bean counters .

All in all the Cylinder deactivation as far as I can see would NOT cause damage to the engine , maybe kill a few batteries and starters but not the short block or cylinder head . Oh I forgot the cooling system in relation to the engine block maintain even operating temperatures even using cylinder deactivation mode. The water still circulates the same with or without CD. What does happen that is not reported when CD is active is the power drop due to the exhaust temperature reduction at the exhaust port that slows down the exhaust effecting the low engine speed power. Although not talked about because unless a driver was going from CD to WOT instantly they would never notice the slight throttle lag or response .

most of this information can be confirmed with easy to use even for a tinkerer or DIY with inexpensive monitoring devices.

Curtis Matfield comes to mind:
Hey, hey
Love, love
Yeah, yeah
Ah, ha
Thread is dead
That's what I said
Everybody's misused it
Ripped it up and abused it
Another junkie plan
Pushing dope for the program
A terrible blow
But that's how it goes
A dead thread on the forum now
If you want to be a junkie, wow
Remember thread is dead

We're all built up with progress
But sometimes I must confess
We can deal with vehicles and dreams
But reality, what does it mean
Ain't nothing said
Cause thread is dead
