Default CX-5 2014/2019 towbar and wiring harness compatibility

Good Afternoon All,

New member, and fortunate to stumble on this site.

As the subject asks, are the towbar and trailer wiring harnesses on the 2014 and 2019 models compatible?

I've sold my 2014 CX-5, and taking delivery of a 2019 model on Friday. Naturally, I'd prefer to not have to buy a new towbar and harness.

Any advice/opinions are appreciated.

Well no responses, but I have the answer.

The towbar that fits 2013 - 2016 CX-5 (KE) also fits the KF model, 2017 - 2019, and maybe beyond.

The roof rack also fits. The earlier Mazda roof bars have only one fixing screw, and the new model, 2 at each point, but the thread is the same size. The gutter cover has no provision for the screws, and if you buy the new roof bars, you must also buy a pair of gutter covers, not included with the roof bars. The existing gutter covers can be marked and drilled, and that's what some of the after market roof bar kits require.

I have to buy a new wiring harness/loom because I hard wired the individual lights to a plug, and the harness pugged into that. I have one in the post from the US, less than half the Mazda genuine part!!

A new Mazda towbar and harness costs $1600 fitted!!! I bought the previous towbar from Curt in the US, and 5 years ago with the favourable exchange rate, it cost A$160 landed here. I wired the harness myself, and the only cost was a couple of plugs and wire, about $15.00 total.

This installation will be the cost of the harness only.

Glad you found a solution. I'm contemplating whether I should try and source one myself and get someone to install it or simply pay for someone to do it.
Not sure how the towbar could affect your warranty on a new vehicle though being a "non-Mazda" part?

I see you're in NZ. In Australia, consumer law demands that if a warranty claim is made, it must be proved by the manufacturer that the non standard part/service actually caused the fault for which a claim is made, e.g., if the car is serviced by a non Mazda mechanic, and he/she used an incorrect grade of oil, it must be shown that that different grade/type of oil caused the problem.

Mazda would have to look hard to find how an after market towbar or roof rack could possibly cause a problem with, for example, the engine, or gearbox.

My rear shockers currently have a very small weep of hydraulic fluid, so I'll be off to Mazda to have them checked soon, well within the warranty period. My regular mechanic said they probably won't replace them.....yet.

Our consumer laws are very robust, and very much in favour of the consumer.
