2021 oil burning isue.
I have Mazda 021 CE Turbo - which is amongst the units that Mazda listed as potentially having the excessive oil burning issue. Due to a L knee fracture and subsequent L knee replacement, my driving in my CE has been very limited - only 6600 miles. But the new knee is on the mend and will shortly be back to my usual 10-12k miles per year. Had my oil changed twice (3k and 5k) but I must confess I never checked the oil levels, but the low oil warning never went off either. Question for those in this group, has anyone traded theirs's in for a 22 or other vehicle because of this issue and just how many cars in that group, actually experience excessive oil consumption?
I don’t think that anyone can give you a definitive answer. While most Mazda boards mention it, oil consumption doesn’t seem to be that widespread….but that’s not a definitive answer. Since Mazda considers the loss of less than one quart of oil in 1200 miles as “normal”, if you changed you oil at 5000 miles then if you had what Mazda considers excess consumption you’d have been over 4 quarts low in a system holding 5 quarts. That would mean a low oil warning, the engine would shut off and there would be engine damage. So it is doubtful that you have what Mazda considers as excessive consumption. It would be wise to check the oil level at least monthly - after all that is the driver’s responsibility. I am constantly amazed at the number of folks who don’t check their oil level, especially with all the excess consumption by various makers’ engines including Honda, Toyota, Ford, Jeep, Subaru, BMW. Just today a friend told me that his daughter-in-law only checks her oil “when the light comes on”…..

Foe what it’s worth, my CE turbo uses less than half a quart in 5000 miles.

And even then it varies. My wife and I both owned Subaru's along with my parents (She still has hers along with my parents) - None of them use\d any oil between changes and we waited till the 6500 limit most times.

I have a Toyota Tacoma (it is a three year lease) so I don't care much and I use it to tow my trailer. This thing has burned oil since day one. About 1 quart every 1,000 miles -towing or not - I also think it's part luck !
It can be the luck of the draw. I had a 2010 Subaru with the 3.6 H6 engine that used oil. I had a 1986 Acura Integra that never used oil, even after 260,000 miles. I would have gone longer with it, but I got rear ended by a minivan and shoved into the Jeep ahead of me. The car was three feet shorter and my watch landed in the back seat. Always make sure your headrests are adjusted, I got out without any injuries.
I've had two Subarus, one a 99 4 banger and an 01 VDC 6 cylinder. Both went about 200,000 miles before repair costs exceeded value, but neither had serious engine problem and neither used any oil. I've had two Toyota 4Runners, one an 86 4 cylinder 5 speed manual and a 95 6 cylinder auto. Both started using about 1 quart every 1,000 miles at around 65,000 miles. (For the record, my 74 Celica GT 5 speed didn't use a drop of oil up until its untimely demise by a dump truck on the wrong side of the road at 180,000). I've had 3 Mazdas now, two MX5's (97 and 13) and my 14 CX5. None used or are using oil between changes. It's luck of the draw to an extent, but I won't buy another 4Runner.
