Default 2018 - Intermittent fault

2.2 diesel Skyactiv. I've owned the car for 2 years. It occasionally feels like it's going to stall when on the move with no obvious cause. Took to a garage, they couldn't find what was wrong - no codes. Fuel filter was replaced and was full of water and dirt. Problem kept happening and car stalled after pulling out of a junction. Engine had power but car wouldn't start. Recovered to garage, there were still no codes and smoke test revealed no leaks. They have said that replacing the fuel filter can cause air bubbles to get into the system but that doesn't explain why the same issue was happening before the fuel filter was replaced. Would rather avoid going to a dealership but maybe needs must. Any ideas?

If crud was found in the filter there could still be some in the fuel tank? Only my 2 cents, but that's where I would have a nosey.
