2016 CX-5 - FWD or AWD?

Good day all. If this was discussed before please post the link to the thread.

Narrowed down my search to either a 2016 Touring or Grand Touring, and am seeing some decent deals on FWD models. I live in NW GA, and don't see snow (maybe 1 or 2 days of light dustings per season, but it never stays on the ground), but can see some heavy rainfall.

I've always though of myself as the AWD type, but am beginning to think otherwise. I know the FWD offers marginally better fuel economy, and long term may require less maintenance. I've read also that when changing tires on a AWD vehicle you should change all 4 at the same time (rather than in pairs), is this true?

My questions are:

1. How does the FWD perform in the wet (not snow) vs the AWD?
2. How prone is the AWD transfer case and system as a whole to failure or expensive repairs?

I am going to test drive both the AWD and FWD in the next couple days, but don't expect to feel much difference on dry pavement on a short road test.

If there is not much of a price and mpg difference, I would go with the AWD to have extra peace of mind to know that AWD is there in case you need it.

Tires will make or break your experience fwd or awd. Good all seasons like Conti Cross Contact LX25's or Michelin Cross Climates and you're golden.
