CX3 Oil Filter Oil Loss / PCV Related???
Its what I do....

However I have had a few intake manifolds needing to be removed and or changed in the shop. But I assign my Tech or mechanic for that service. I don't really get elbow deep in customer dirty vehicles anymore. lol
extremely lucky, I think she drove it for 15-20 minutes in town, and at this point there isn't any evidence, of engine damage. We do run full synthetic oil, and I agree there was probably enough residual oil around in the motor for some limited lubrication. Probably advanced a little engine wear, but got lucky nothing like you say irrefutable. My guess is the last guy that changed the oil probably "under" hand tightened over 6 months it slightly loosened through heat cycles, I put the new one one as tight as I could get it with my bare hands, how tight should it be?
I never use a if filter wrench and always hand tighten. There really is no need for a oil filter wrench if you install an oil filter correctly. Funny I wonder how many have actually read the oil filter manufacture information on how to tighten their oil filters? You theory could be plausible but will never know. The rubber sealing ring when it is even slightly compressed will not allow the oil filter to rotate. I would venture to say that it is more likely oil has been slowly leaking from the oil filter for that period of 6 months. You can semi confirm this by looking at the oil trails splattered in and around the oil filter.
To answer your question, you over tightened the oil filter which is fine. LOL Most spin on oil filters you rotate until the seal just starts to contact the oil filter adapter. then about 1/2 to 3/4 turn? If it is starting to feel like you really need to grip and turn you either need to exercise more
or you are really making it tighter than it needs to be.Funny Mazda OEM oil filters have no printed install info like aftermarket oil filters. Why is that , if I answered that to many would take offense as to the historical reason not just Mazda.
But if you were a mechanic at the dealership, you could access the oil filter install information in the factory service manual.

👍 on hand tightening. In her case, no, it dumped out at once as we discovered a big puddle where she parked it that night on the street. Before I bought a new filter I hand tightened her old one, put a quart of oil i had in, started it, turned it off and it immediately had a puddle of the new quart. I thought the filter was cracked or something, but examined it and couldn't see anything, but to my surprise and delight the new filter held!
