Shift stick way to short........Help?

Shift stick way to short........Help?
When I went to see the truck (87 B2000) last weekend (it's at my parents place), I noticed the shifter stick barely came up over the seat cushion, Is this normal for that truck or has the transmission been swapped out?
Everything is bolted up to where it belongs and the truck does not have a body lift.
Also the shifter as a lot play. It goes into gear just fine and doesn't pop out, but there is alot of movement before anything happens. How do I fix this?
