Seats in a pickup bed (California...)

Ok, I have done some research over the past week or so and no matter whereI look, nobody says anything definitive about the details of mounting seats, seatbelts, etc in the bed of a pickup truck (especially in California, where everything is illegal...:(). i found it on the california web site under FAQ. they say you need federal approved aftermarket seats and seat belts. all occupents must be seat belted in.

Yes, I agree... Occupants must be seat belted. Mazda seats is one of the important factor for safetiness.

You could make a structure to bolt seats into, like an off-road truck. Make a tubular hoop that the seats bolt to, that hoop would be welded to flat plates on the floor of the bed, corresponding plates would go on the bottom of the bed and the plates would be bolted together to sandwich the floor. For most situations, that would be good enough, on my truck, I ran tubes from the bottom plates to the frame of my truck to tie them in.

Corbeau makes a real comfortable seat for around $150

Here's a pic of the inside of the rollcage on my Bronco and you get the idea....
